Autonomous UAV Route Planning for Coverage Maximization in Environmental Monitoring: A Systematic Literature Review

First seen · 7/4/2026, 06:19 AMLatest activity · 7/4/2026, 06:19 AM

This paper presents an ongoing systematic literature review of autonomous UAV route planning for coverage-oriented environmental monitoring, following the PRISMA 2020 framework. Searches of Scopus and Web of Science identified 562 records from 2015–2026; 161 duplicates were removed, leaving 401 records screened by title, abstract, and keywords. Of these, 247 studies were retained for full-text eligibility assessment, including 235 preliminary eligible studies and 12 borderline cases. Early findings indicate strong research concentration on coverage planning, multi-UAV coordination, and energy-aware optimization, while weather, uncertainty, obstacle-rich environments, and real-world validation receive less attention.
