AMD Proposes a Linux eSPI Subsystem for Unified BIOS, TPM, and Management-Channel Support

First seen · 8/5/2026, 06:53 PMLatest activity · 8/5/2026, 06:53 PM

On August 4, AMD submitted four Linux kernel patches proposing a dedicated eSPI subsystem rather than extending the existing SPI framework. eSPI multiplexes Peripheral, Virtual Wire, Out-of-Band, and Flash Access channels over one physical link for functions including host I/O, power sequencing, management messages, BIOS access, and TPM connectivity. The AMD controller driver is approximately 599 lines and was tested on the AMDI0070 platform. The proposal currently relies on ACPI, requires manual device enumeration, and lacks some channel operations and ALERT# interrupt handling.
