AI as Friction for Reflection Support in Ideation

First seen · 7/29/2026, 08:20 PMLatest activity · 7/29/2026, 08:20 PM

This paper challenges the assumption that generative AI should always reduce friction in creative work. It argues that accepting, rejecting, and reworking candidate ideas is not merely a route to an output, but a reflection-in-action process through which designers develop and communicate rationale. This is especially important in group ideation, where ideas must be explained before others can extend, reject, or combine them. The authors therefore propose treating AI as a friction agent that prompts reflection and helps designers build and carry rationale, rather than primarily smoothing or substituting for creative production.
