According to The Decoder, Google will begin shutting down Google Assistant on Android and Wear OS on September 4, 2026, replacing it with Gemini across smartphones, tablets, watches, and Android Auto. The transition gives Gemini a much larger role as Google’s default user-facing assistant. It also creates a practical reliability test: Gemini must handle routine commands such as timers, navigation, and device control with the predictability users expected from the more deterministic Google Assistant.
