Global Drivers and Barriers to Public Acceptance of Autonomous Vehicles: Evidence from 17 Countries

This study examines public acceptance of SAE Level 3 conditionally automated cars using the L3Pilot Global User Acceptance Survey. The final sample contains 18,603 respondents from 17 countries spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. A UTAUT2-based structural equation model found that performance expectancy, social influence, and hedonic motivation were the main drivers of intention to use Level 3 vehicles. Effort expectancy and facilitating conditions had smaller direct effects, while age, gender, and prior advanced driver-assistance-system experience were statistically significant but comparatively weak predictors.
