This study examined how GitHub Copilot affects professional developers’ use of security APIs. Forty-four developers completed security API programming tasks with and without Copilot assistance. Copilot improved functional correctness and marginally reduced some insecure patterns, but it did not significantly improve secure API usage. Developers rarely raised security concerns while using the assistant, and many failed to recognize that their final implementations remained insecure. The paper presents recommendations for improving security awareness and outlines directions for safer AI-assisted software development.
