Anthropic S-1 Filing Highlights Generative AI's Heavy Reliance on Natural Gas

Original title:Anthropic 上市文件披露:当今 AI 产业严重依赖天然气

Industry82

IT之家, October 27 — According to a report by The Verge early today (27th), Anthropic, which is preparing for an IPO, revealed in its S-1 registration statement the generative AI industry’s heavy reliance on methane. The document notes that there is intense competition for electricity supplies and well-positioned data center sites.

Anthropic’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission acknowledges that data centers are increasingly reliant on "natural gas," the primary component of which is methane. This means that Anthropic’s plans to build AI data centers will be constrained by rising fuel prices and supply chain bottlenecks. The document also admits that global temperature increases caused by burning fossil fuels will further drive up its own operating costs. Some planned data centers need to rely on on-site gas turbines for power generation. Anthropic rents computing resources from major cloud service providers and also announced a $50 billion (IT Home note: approximately 334.188 billion RMB at current exchange rates) investment plan last year to expand data centers in Texas and New York.

The United States is home to the highest concentration of data centers in the world. To meet the continuous growth in power demand from data centers, the scale of fossil fuel power generation facilities planned for construction in the U.S. is at its highest level in a decade.

A shortage of gas turbines has also slowed down data center construction. To shorten the wait time for grid connection, some developers have chosen to install gas-fired internal combustion engines to generate their own power. Due to a backlog of orders at gas turbine manufacturers, developers have also turned to technologically simpler gas turbines, which has not only reduced on-site power generation efficiency but also increased pollution.

While data centers increase greenhouse gas emissions, Anthropic views climate change as an operational risk in its IPO filing. As temperatures rise, electricity and water costs required to cool data center servers will also increase.

Anthropic also anticipates that as major cloud service providers and data center operators race to build data centers, there will be more intense competition for natural gas supplies and pipeline capacity, which could drive up gas prices.

IT之家 learned from the report that natural gas power generation accounts for 40% of the total electricity generation in the U.S., making it the country's primary source of power. As utility companies rush to upgrade energy infrastructure to meet the continuous growth in electricity demand, the American public is also bearing increasingly higher costs.

Residents across the U.S. who are dissatisfied with data center construction have successfully blocked dozens of proposed projects. Anthropic acknowledges that concerns over sharp increases in electricity costs are enough to affect the progress of data center projects. "If the measures we take to secure electricity supply are perceived to impact other electricity users and the grid as a whole, regulators may impose restrictions, levy standby power charges, or make other demands to address these impacts."

If regulators require data center developers to bear more of the construction costs for new energy infrastructure, Anthropic’s operating expenses could also increase further. If a stable supply of natural gas cannot be secured, or if the pipelines needed to transport natural gas are lacking, some data center construction plans might even be forced to be delayed or canceled. Ultimately, these issues could constrain Anthropic's business growth.

Why it's worth reading

The filing brings generative AI's physical resource constraints into sharp focus, detailing how natural gas supply bottlenecks and power grid resistance are becoming direct operational limits on model scaling.
