We must treat these issues as complete, full-stack challenges, requiring optimization at every level, from pixel-level design all the way down to the kernel scheduler and drivers. We bring together teams from across Microsoft, while also organizing our own teams, to monitor and analyze the various tasks users actually perform. We then continually ask: How can we reduce memory usage? We examine preloading mechanisms and how long certain content should remain preloaded. This allows the system to release the associated resources when users are no longer frequently using an application, freeing up more capacity when system memory pressure genuinely needs to be reduced. We also revisit our design approaches to ensure that when users encounter memory constraints, they can more easily decide which programs they no longer need to keep running and close them to relieve pressure on the system.” On the application side, March Rogers, Microsoft’s Director of Design Partnerships, said that the dark-themed Properties interface is only the beginning. Microsoft says it is accelerating the migration of the Windows 11 interface to WinUI 3, directly reducing Windows 11’s memory and performance overhead by retiring legacy Win32- and WebView2-based components. Rogers said that some dark-mode interfaces in Windows 11 were adapted from legacy UI, but that this was merely a low-risk “stopgap.” Microsoft plans to migrate more of the Windows 11 interface to WinUI 3. ITHome also reported today that Microsoft is testing AI integration in Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA), using MCP to help developers analyze Windows 11 performance issues. After WPA MCP is enabled, developers can use GitHub Copilot CLI within the WPA trace-analysis workflow. Instead of reviewing charts and tables one by one, developers can ask about the source of an issue in natural language and have AI generate an analysis summary. The report says Microsoft has already been using WPA’s AI tools internally to investigate Windows performance issues. The integration can also help application, driver, and hardware developers identify input latency, performance regressions, CPU activity, memory activity, scheduling issues, and other anomalies.
