IT Home reported on September 10 that a senior German military official revealed to the German business daily Handelsblatt that the German armed forces are evaluating 30 artificial intelligence tools to accelerate battlefield decision-making, with plans to deploy the system starting in 2027.

IT Home noted that Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, head of the German Cyber and Information Domain Service Headquarters, said in an interview with the newspaper: "Relevant research, development, and testing are still underway, and I am optimistic that a prototype system can be delivered by the second quarter of 2027, with the entire system expected to become fully operational in 2028."

The Russia-Ukraine war has shown the world that drones and satellites continuously generate massive amounts of data. Battlefield transparency has reached an unprecedented level, while simultaneously creating a need for artificial intelligence to process this information at speeds beyond human capability.

According to reports, most of the AI tools under evaluation were developed by German domestic companies, with French firm ChapsVision being one of the few foreign vendors participating in the competition.

Daum stated in April this year that the German military currently has no plans to procure the Maven Smart System from U.S. data analytics and defense software company Palantir, which is the most prominent AI tool of its kind.

The United States, NATO command, and several allies have already deployed Palantir's Maven system to analyze battlefield data such as images and video, improving situational awareness and accelerating operational decisions.

Some European countries have shown resistance to this system, with the core concern being that it would create technological dependence on the United States and compromise data sovereignty. Previously, former U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened to withdraw from NATO, leading many European nations to view the U.S. as an unreliable ally.
